John Cartwright Fund for Law

£27,580 has been raised from 42 donors.

Emeritus Professor John Cartwright was Tutor in Law here from 1982 to 2018, and remains an active member of the House. His impact on Law students and those interested in a legal career has been immeasurable, and Christ Church wishes to mark his retirement with the creation of this fund, to honour and celebrate his contributions. The endowed fund is intended to focus on providing scholarships for graduates reading for the BCL, MJur, MLF and DPhil degrees in Law.

Law students face huge financial barriers to postgraduate study, even though it is increasingly a prerequisite for outstanding careers in legal practice or academia. Many will have significant loan liabilities from undergraduate study, and we are particularly conscious that those supported by undergraduate bursaries face even greater difficulty in pursuing their intellectual and career ambitions at graduate level.

Donations will allow us to provide scholarships to facilitate graduate legal study, with its huge potential for positive national and international influence.
